Eliana Headshot Uniform NWRESD.jpeg

Eliana Mason

2x paralympic medalist in goalball; former recipient of NWRESD services

Eliana Mason grew up in Beaverton Oregon, and graduated high school from

the International School of Beaverton in 2013. She received services from the NWRESD

from the time she was a baby until graduating high school from the vision services department.

Eliana was born with Glaucoma and Cataracts resulting in severe vision loss from birth.

She attended college at Portland State University and graduated in 2017 with her Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a minor in community health. Eliana continued her education by pursuing

a Master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Antioch University

and graduated this past summer. Additionally Eliana is an athlete and is a 2-time Paralympic medalist

for Team USA in the sport of goalball. Goalball is a sport that is geared specifically for blind

and visually impaired athletes and creates a competitive environment where vision loss is not a barrier or limitation. In 2016 Eliana helped her team bring home a bronze medal and in 2021 for

the Tokyo 2020 Games a silver medal.

Eliana is passionate about disability advocacy and education and is hoping to use

her counseling degree to bridge a much-needed gap between mental health services,

and disability education and inclusion. In her spare time Eliana enjoys spending time

with family and friends, reading, staying active, and walking her dog.

A Deeper Dive: Reframing the Land Acknowledgement and Educating Ourselves on Our Region’s Diverse Stories and Histories

Facilitator: Steph Littlebird, Artist, Banks schools graduate, Curator of the This IS Kalapuyan Land at the Five Oaks Museum | This workshop will be recorded

Who should attend?

This workshop is for anyone at NWRESD.

We can all be more mindful of how we learn and remember our region’s history and how we encourage others to do the same in our classroom domains, the meetings we facilitate, etc.

Objectives

Attendees will receive a brief overview of the Pacific Northwest’s Indigenous history, our nine
Federally recognized tribes and contemporary presence in Oregon, plus academic resources for educators. Who is this acknowledgement for? Learn about Indigenous perspectives on the “Land Acknowledgement” trend, also how teachers and leadership can make deeper
commitments to the Native community with a more intentional approach.

Activity: Making a commitment

Participants will reflect on the information presented as it relates to history, contemporary
Indigenous people and the broader community. These ideas should inform a written “Land
Commitment” that considers the perspective of Indigenous people.
